It’s the spooky season, folks. For some travelers, the prospect of eerie sounds and ghostly apparitions might be disconcerting, but for others, nothing is more thrilling than a stay at a haunted hotel — allegedly haunted, that is. The historic hotels listed below offer more than just a nice room and a cozy bed for a night or two, they come with spine-chilling histories and rumors of ghostly guests.

As an added bonus, there is a Pinkerton twist. Many a historic swindler, sneak thief, forger, and bank robber on the prowl found his, or her, way to these haunted hotels with a Pinkerton operative close behind. And a couple of these hotels — namely the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans and the Hotel Pfister in Milwaukee — were themselves victims of crimes. Of course, we caught the bad guys, but where those guys went in the afterlife is a mystery to us.

If spotting specters is on your bucket list, go ahead and plan your visit. But let us help you with one bit of information.
