As a Mover and Shaker, Montreal was one of Canada’s five most visited cities in 2022 along with Toronto, Vancouver, Quebec City, and Niagara Falls.
According to Tourisme Montréal, Canada's second-largest city, with approximately 6.1 million residents in the greater Montreal area, attracted some 8 million visitors, a number expected to increase to 9.5 million this year.
Montreal has a vast underbelly – not the criminal kind – but rather an Underground City, a multi-level network of tunnels and stairways that connect shopping malls, office buildings, metro stations, universities, banks, entertainment venues, museums, and restaurants covering more than 12 square kilometers of Montreal's core downtown area.
In the 1960s, city planners designed the Underground believing it would reduce traffic in the city’s most densely populated area. On average, 500,000 people pass through the subterranean maze every day. While it is commonly believed that the tunnels are used to escape winter's cold and inclement weather, more people use them to escape summer's heat.
If you are thinking of taking a trip to Montreal, note there are more than 190 exterior access points to the network. Also note that of the most visited Canadian cities, Montreal has the lowest total crime risk score, scoring 0.77x on the Pinkerton Crime Index.
Crime risk scores are multiples of the national median crime risk of 1.0x. A score of 0.5x is half as risky. While Pinkerton Crime Index cannot predict if you will be the victim of a crime, it is important to know your crime risk so that you can make informed decisions.
Know your risk. Be safe.
