The addition of a new country crime index requires creative problem solving and produces new bespoke statistical machinery. These innovations offer improvements in our existing measures of crime and strengthen and expand our toolkit as we approach new countries.
Every country’s Pinkerton Crime Index (PCI) process begins with a thorough investigation of the government’s official crime data publications. We determine the quality of official crime counts and what barriers may stand in the way of producing accurate measurements of risk.
The Science Behind Pinkerton's Crime Data Innovation for Brazil
PCI Brazil, our newest available country, presented many unique challenges to accurately measure neighborhood risk. Official crime data publications were missing regions and years of data. Comprehensive granular census data was last published in 2011. These facets meant official crime counts lent an uncertain view of community crime dynamics.
Additionally, much of the available data stood in disagreement across varying geographical resolutions. Local reporting for crime types did not add up to state or national-level totals. Some crime types disappeared from reporting at various municipal levels publication.
These inconsistencies left knowledge gaps in producing meaningful measurements of crime risk. It also prompted us to diversify the range of community data and deep investigations into the relationships of different crime types and how they behave across Brazil.
The resulting PCI Brazil offers a unique value proposition: an accurate, nationwide tool facilitating comparisons of violent and property crime risk across a diverse spread of communities covering 99% of Brazil's population
Beyond Numbers: The Statistical Artistry of the Pinkerton Crime Index
While many crime and risk products rely on baseline official reporting, PCI goes above and beyond — assessing many inputs through elegantly crafted statistical machinery designed to capture crime risk missing from official reportage. PCI can also to project risk into the near future. Every PCI also takes full advantage of Pinkerton’s global network of expertise, checking our statistical insights against the real-world experience of local investigators and security professionals.
