Stretching over 500 miles along the coast from San Diego in the south to Sonoma in the north, the California Missions Trail boasts 21 missions established over 54 years from 1769 to 1823. Founded as frontier outposts, the missions evolved into some of the state’s most famous cities, including Santa Barbara, San Jose, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, and San Juan Capistrano, a charming city that is home to California’s oldest neighborhood, first winery, and annual swallow migration. We thought it would be interesting to see how these historic sites — once the wild west and now at the center of their cities — ranked on the Pinkerton Crime Index at the street level. And according to our latest monthly numbers, Mission San Juan Capistrano scored a crime risk of 1.55, or 1.55x times higher than the national average.
