More protests and instability may plague Hong Kong in the long-term.

The Fugitive Offenders Ordinance suspension is taking center stage when it comes to increased protesting in Hong Kong. But the real issue that businesses have their eyes on, as we inch closer to 2047, is the uncertainty and instability of the laws and institutional differences between Hong Kong and the mainland.

Grant Strudwick says that the recent controversy in Hong Kong is “uncertainty”. “Companies will want to know what laws can be relied upon, what laws will be used, and which institutions will support your business operations… 2047 is coming and everyone is concerned about the difference between Hong Kong’s system and the mainland. Some companies have decided to set their headquarters in Singapore instead of Hong Kong because Singapore has lower political risks.”
